The most euphorically--

Neil pulls a hand away to cover his mouth. Red starts to blossom across his cheeks. "Shit." That's kinda embarrassing. "I don't actually go above a moderate volume, do I?"

[doubletap]

"Nah," he replies, reaching with a hand to thumb the red on Neil's cheek. He leans in to touch foreheads. "Don't be embarrassed. I love hearing you. It lets me know you like what I'm doing."

[goodfight]

"Oh, I don't mind you," Neil returns. "I just don't like other people knowing what we're doing."

Prying into their business. He drops his hand, however, eyes staying on Alex's. "You also know all that stuff is less active and more reactive," he adds.

[doubletap]

"If anyone ever heard," he offers sweetly, like the gentlest of loving words. "I could make it so they never hear again."

For the latter: "What are you telling me with that?"

"...Are you going to fire off a double-barrel shotgun right next to their ear?" Neil asks eagerly. Mostly joking, of course.

He sobers at the next, frowning heavily. "Reacting takes less willpower," is the explanation. "Just feel like I don't actively participate is all."

[doubletap]

"Whatever you like," he croons to Neil. "It could be an anniversary present."

He listens to Neil's explanation, then shakes his head. "It's a two person dance. You're participating. Honestly."

[goodfight]

"Didn't we technically pass our anniversary already?" Neil suddenly cannot remember.

Hardly critical, however, as he glances away, eyes unreadable. "What should I do about this feeling, then?"

[doubletap]

"Wow, breaking the mood," he complains. "It was late--" Huh. "Late August." He is suddenly a little shy. "Which is now."

To Neil's question, Alex only responds. "Participate more, like you wanted. Take control until you're confident. Until you are comfortable showing how you feel in that manner."

[goodfight]

Slowly, carefully, Neil gives a sly smile. "So this quest came in at the perfect time," he declares. "How apropos." That a year since the last, they would be here, same place and not.

The thought has him showing more certainty at the suggestion. "Okay. Alright," he gives. "I will."

[doubletap]

That more or less settled has Alex focusing on the sudden anniversary thing. "So. Are you. Hm. Interested? In anniversary stuff?"

"Sure," Neil pipes in. "Never had anniversary stuff for anything. What are we doing?"

[doubletap]

A small nervous laugh. He quiets it quickly. "What do you want to do?"

[goodfight]

Such a cute reaction. "Hang out with you. What we actually do is negligible to me. I'm fine just staying like this."

[doubletap]

No. No. Not blushing. Why would he be?

"It's also probably customary to give gifts..."

[goodfight]

There's color high on Alex's cheekbones, spreading back. Neil touches them on automatic. "Probably. Think I owe you two gifts since I missed your birthday."

Alex actually looks surprised at this. He does nothing to dissuade the touching. "Oh, I meant more me getting you something. You don't have to get me any--"

He makes a face.

"...I'm doing it again, aren't I? The being weird about gifts."

[goodfight]

"Yes, sir," Neil answers, his fingers lightly running across the cheekbones. "There ain't anything wrong about gifts when they're from people you care about."

His expression transitions to melancholy. "Gifts can be a way to remember the giver, after all."

[doubletap]

The sentences affect, but the expression given needs a response. He slips his arms around Neil again, nuzzling. "No need to remember when I hold you in my arms like this."

He wonders, suddenly. Wonders if proximity and closeness are always just enough.

Nevertheless, Neil gives a nod. His hands find Alex's hair, fingers petting the strand. "They're still interesting, though," he continues. "Gifts, I mean. They're like manifestations of someone's thoughts regarding you, I think. That's how I approach them, at least."

[doubletap]

He makes an embarrassingly pleased sound at the petting, arms tightening around Neil. "That makes me nervous, then," he murmurs, half-distracted. "I'll have to start rethinking the stuff I get you."

[goodfight]

"I dunno," Neil murmurs. "I liked the gifts you got me when we were at the Hub. I mean, the incendiary bullets alone pretty much made my month. And the figurine...

"Only one other person's took the time to make something for me." His fingers continue to move lightly. "It did a lot for me."

Neil's birthday was easy to find out in Alex's chaotic trip to Vault 101. It was added to his PimpBoy, and when it rolled around during their trip last month, Alex made Neil two things. The incendiary bullets for a 20 gauge shotgun (difficult, but not impossible), and a figure made of shell casings meant to resemble Dogmeat (...whether it did or not, that is the question).

But now Neil pets him, and tells Alex it did something for him. Alex makes a whimper--at the response, at the petting--and shifts against the growing hardness in his lap. "...Like giving you stuff," he murmurs. "Like making you stuff."

Food, ammo, fixing his guns and armor. Anything and everything. Alex likes to provide.

When Alex presented those two things during their California tour, Neil stared. His dark eyes grew cloudy, and it was hell trying to speak without cracking his voice. Only James Park had done something similar with a old BB gun, restored from odd parts and a spring from Butch's switchblade. But that had felt like a farewell, a departure from their bond as father and son.

Alex's gifts, on the other hand, were reminiscent of hope. Of a life waiting to be lived.

Neil doesn't stop petting. He doesn't cease with the words floating around in his head. "You gave me my life. You made me continue," he says. "Thank you."

Again, Alex makes a sound, and at the words' end, he shifts forward, kissing Neil hungrily. He leans his body into him, pressing sensitive areas with his own, and kissing him. He breaks to kiss along Neil's jaw, moving down his neck.

"...You, too," he mumbles in-between affection. "You're my life."

Alex closes the distance with a kiss, pressing them together in more than one place. In more than on way. No matter how spent he might be, Neil continues to react. His fingers move to grip the other man's hair, a small noise escaping his lips.
